Coverage and freshness

What this dataset holds, when each source was last read, and — the part directories usually leave you to guess — what it does not hold and why.

An organization with no filings here has not necessarily filed nothing. The exclusions below are the reasons it might be missing.

Approximate, measured 12 October 2026. Row totals are database estimates rather than exact counts — an exact count over ten million rows is a full table scan, and these are rounded well inside the estimate's error. The per-year figures below are exact.

Returns by tax year

One row per return. An amended return and the amendment that replaced it count once, not twice.

Form 990 returns held, by tax year
Tax year Returns
2022 546,464
2023 554,605
2024 495,762
2025 156,071

How current it is

The newest return held was filed 11 October 2026. Each source below shows when it was last read successfully — a source that failed shows its last good read, not the attempt.

Ingest sources and when each was last read
Source Last read
IRS Business Master File 5 October 2026
Form 990 e-file returns 7 October 2026
Auto-revocation list 9 October 2026
Publication 78 9 October 2026
California charity registry 9 October 2026
California fundraising campaigns 9 October 2026
IRS monthly e-file releases 28 September 2026

Reading a source is not the same as the IRS publishing one. Electronic Form 990 returns reach the public record in irregular batches, typically every two to three months, and we poll monthly — so a return can be several months old before it appears here, however recently the last read ran.

What is excluded, and why

Each of these is a reason an organization you expect to find is absent, or a year of its history is missing. None of them is a bug.

Form 990 only
The long-form return. Organizations filing the short Form 990-EZ, the private-foundation Form 990-PF, or the 990-N postcard are in the organization list — they come from the IRS Business Master File — but carry no filings, officers or financials here.
Electronic returns only
A return filed on paper is not machine-readable and is not held here. It looks identical to a year an organization did not file.
Recent tax years only
Filings begin at tax year 2022. Earlier returns exist upstream and are not held here.
Names and addresses as filed
Nothing is normalized, corrected or deduplicated. A name is the string the filer typed, truncated the way the IRS truncates it. Two records naming the same person are not linked, and this dataset makes no claim that they are the same human.
Grants are one-sided
A grant appears because the grantor reported it. Money received by an organization is therefore a floor and an unknown one — a funder who files on paper, files a different form, or has not been published yet is simply absent.
Two sources are California only
Everything else here is federal and nationwide. The charity registry and the paid-fundraiser campaigns are published by the California Attorney General and cover organizations registered to solicit in that state — so an organization elsewhere carries no rows from either, and its absence from them says nothing about it. Neither is an enforcement signal in the other direction: California's registry has no delinquent, suspended or revoked status in its vocabulary, so a listing is not clearance and an absence is not trouble.
