Nonprofiteer

Terms of use

Last updated 29 September 2026.

Nonprofiteer is run by Crismali Industries LLC ("we"). By using the site or the API you agree to these terms. They are short because the data is meant to be used.

The data

The IRS filings this data comes from are public domain. This database is published under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0: you may copy it, keep it, build on it, republish it and use it commercially. In return, credit the source, and if you share a database built from this one, share it under the same licence. A credit line you can use:

Nonprofit data from IRS filings via Nonprofiteer; 990 e-file data via the GivingTuesday 990 Data Infrastructure Project (ODbL).

No guarantee

We copy filings as they were filed, and some fields are our own derivations — an organization's latest filed name, whether its exemption is currently revoked, which of two returns for a year is the canonical one. Filings contain mistakes and so can our reading of them. The data is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. Before you rely on a figure for anything that matters, check it against the return it came from — the API serves the original IRS document for every filing we hold.

The API and keys

The API needs a free key, which identifies you so the rate limits have something to count and so we can reach you. It is not a licence to the data — the data is open either way. A key lasts 365 days unless it is revoked. We may suspend or revoke any key, at our discretion, for example if it is being used to abuse the service. The rate limits are the ones published on the API page at the time of your request; we may change them.

Using it fairly

Reading the public pages, including by crawler, is welcome — though for anything in bulk the API is faster for you and lighter for us. Please do not:

  • try to get past the rate limits, for example by rotating keys or addresses;
  • send traffic meant to slow the service down or take it offline;
  • try to reach parts of the service that are not public, or test its security without asking us first.

Liability

This is a free service. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, the API or the data, and our total liability to you for anything arising from them is limited to the amount you have paid us, which is nothing.

The rest

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, and any dispute belongs in the state or federal courts located there. We may change these terms; the date at the top changes when we do, and using the service afterwards means accepting the new version. What we do with information about you is on the privacy page. Questions: [email protected].
