Mission
SHC engages refugees and immigrants to build better communities. Family-friendly programs foster confidence and independence. A network of volunteer tutors and community groups compliment programs and provide individuals and families with personalized support.
-
The English Language Learning Program is a multi-generational program that engages refugees and immigrants and their preschool aged children. The program focuses on individuals with low or no literacy in their native language who face significant barriers to participating in their new communities. Online English language instruction and in-person activities weave together to form a supportive bridge that helps participants comfortably move from the isolation of their homes into the wider community. The Program offers citizenship preparation classes for refugees, asylees, SIVs, and other immigrant families, particularly those who need literacy-based instruction. The Program empowers individuals with limited formal education who often encounter barriers accessing English programs, workforce opportunities, and citizenship preparation. The Community Connections Program connects newly arrived refugees and immigrants residing in Prince Georges and Montgomery counties, MD to services and resources. The English Together Program is a fee for service that provides English Language instruction to parents of students enrolled in the public school system.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
