Mission

EGA is a member network that supports the big tent of environmental philanthropy for collective impact for people and planet. EGA works with its members and partners to promote effective environmental philanthropy by sharing knowledge, fostering debate, cultivating leadership, facilitating collaboration, and catalyzing action. What unites EGA members is a commitment to a world with healthy, equitable, and sustainable ecosystems, communities, and economies.

  • The Environmental Grantmakers Association was formed in 1987 following a meeting of environmental funders in Washington, DC to discuss common interests and to learn about each others programs. As a result of the enthusiasm generated at the meeting, 12 member foundations from across the United States made plans for future gatherings, exchanged grants lists, and published a directory of foundation program interests. Subsequent meetings reaffirmed the groups interest in facilitating increased communication among grantmakers through EGA. Over 30 years later, our membership spans more than 230 foundations, donor and giving programs, spanning large and small in terms of giving level and staff size, and includes multiple types of foundations that are concerned with protecting the environment. In 2022, EGA succesfully held its first in person convening coninuing the tradition of signature events despite the compound crisis of the covid 19 epidemic. EGA host nearly 300 members, and partners featuring the largest BIPOC gathering to date.EGA ratifie its racial equity point of view. EGA has with trusted practitioners to develop impactful signature programming for environmntal grantmakers in leadership. Inside Philanthropy named EGA as a top PSO keeping environmental philanthropy going and growing!United Philanthropy Forum Racial Equity Capacity Assessment detrmine that EGAs internal and external racial equity practices are at the leading edge of PSOs, in general.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
