Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

MONTGOMERY HISTORY'S MISSION IS TO COLLECT, PRESERVE, INTERPRET, AND SHARE THE HISTORIES OF ALL OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY RESIDENTS AND COMMUNITIES.

  • OTHER EDUCATION PROGRAM ACTIVITIESHistory Conversations, our free streaming program, was presented 54 times in FY24 to 11,348 households. We offered Speakers Bureau presentations on historical topics of local and regional significance in venues such as senior centers, professional organizations, neighborhood associations, religious institutions, civic groups, and more. We launched one new online exhibit in FY24, Montgomery County, Then and Now: Photography of Lewis Reed and Barry Gartner and continued to engage with the immigrant community and collect stories to expand our dynamic online exhibit The Immigrant Experience in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our Montgomery County History Conference was held on November 4, 2023, on Montgomery Colleges Rockville campus and attracted a large, diverse, and enthusiastic audience.

    Expenses $292,214

  • LIBRARY AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICESIn FY24 we took the 240 individual audio tracks from 95 oral history interviews, including 22 paper transcripts, and made them publicly available for the first time. We also made additional progress with our New Life for Old News campaign to digitize the now-defunct Montgomery County Gazettes as well as other valuable regional newspapers. In early 2023, we received a grant to digitize a portion of the records of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Montgomery County that date from 1848 through the turn of the century. Our project archivist scanned and uploaded more than 3,300 documents to our digital repository over the course of five months. The project was released for public access in March 2024.

    Expenses $127,651

  • COLLECTIONS, PUBLICATIONS AND MUSEUM ACTIVITIESIn FY24 we produced two issues of the Story. The Fall 2023 issue featured a timely article entitled In Slaverys Shadow: Surveying Montgomery County Public School Names. The Spring 2024 issue was nominated for a public history award and highlights one of the countys first and most prominent businesswoman: Negative Space: The Life of Rebecca G. Fields, Publisher & Proprietor of the Montgomery County Sentinel, 1871-1930. Our artifact collection was in temporary storage throughout FY24. However, we received 13 donations of artifacts totaling 123 objects.

    Expenses $112,026

As filed on the 2023 return.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
