Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

We provide a multifaceted network of supports that address the Social Determinants of Health in historically low-wealth and marginalized communities, especially Black communities. All services are culturally aligned, trauma-informed, and rooted in participant and youth voice.

Activities or mission (Part I)

Umoja Health Wellness and Justice Collectives mission is creating community through connection and culture.

  • HOPE (Healing Our Past Experiences) 4 the Future: A free prevention-based in-school, after-school, and summer program serving more than 100 school-aged children annually across 20+ schools. HOPE provides a safe, creative space for young people to build resiliency, develop leadership, and heal from trauma through arts, mentorship, and culturally aligned peer support.

    Expenses $542,324 · Grants $20,095 · Revenue $348,062

  • Community Paramedic Peer Support Specialists & Ujima Trauma Care Recovery Center: A two-pronged approach to recovery and healing. Trained Peer Support Specialists work alongside Community Paramedics to respond to overdoses and behavioral health crises, providing culturally aligned care, linkage to treatment, and up to one year of continued support. This work is anchored by the Ujima Trauma Care Recovery Center, Buncombe Countys first culturally specific recovery hub for Black and other historically marginalized people navigating substance use, trauma, and systemic barriers. Ujima offers peer-led healing spaces, harm reduction supports, and workforce pathways through the Certified Peer Support Specialist model.

  • John R. Hayes High Steppin Majorettes and Drum Corp: Reviving a historic community marching band tradition rooted in HBCU excellence, this program connects cultural heritage to leadership development, creative expression, and violence prevention. Youth as young as six participate as majorettes, drummers, and dancers, keeping alive a legacy that has long served as both a cultural anchor and a civic hub in Ashevilles Black communities.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
