Mission
BATS Improv is dedicated to the performance, study, development, and promotion of improvisational theatre.
-
School: The BATS School of Improv teaches workshops for both actors and non-actors, teaching skills such as active listening, making one's partner look good, failing good-naturedly, and taking risks. In FY 22-23, the BATS School of Improv offered its foundational curriculum to students both online and in-person with 148 classes that served 1,376 students, including introductory classes, our core curriculum of Foundation, performance labs, plus genre and skills specialty classes, and a flourishing month of summer intensives. Additionally, BATS School of Improv expanded to offer year-round improv classes for youth with 8 classes for kindergarten through 12th grade and a week-long summer camp serving 66 students. Our Communities of Color Scholarship was awarded fee-free places, enabling 24 students of color and diverse ethnicities to study at BATS.
Expenses $267,645 · Revenue $332,987
-
Shows: BATS main stage performers created 123 completely improvised shows engaging 2,274 audience members who watched the shows live. Of these performances, 16 were performances of our first family-friendly matinee show and 107 were regular Friday and Saturday performances with our main stage company. Our show formats included existing audience favorites: Improvised Twilight Zone, Theatresports(TM), The Gather, SuperScene, and Spontaneous Broadway. We also created new formats that continue to bring new voices and diversity to our stage: The Good, The Bad, and The Jolly, More or Less, and Heist! Students also continued to develop innovative virtual formats and were able to return to in-person performances, delivering 23 public showcases at our theater and 14 online during the year.
Expenses $166,574 · Revenue $69,797
-
Corporate: Through its Improv@work training programs, BATS brought improvisational training events to the workplace or coworkers to our theatre to immerse themselves in experiential training that contributes to better collaboration, communication, and team building. In FY 22-23, the Improv@Work program reached clients in a variety of business and educational sectors. We conducted 76 distinct Improv@Work sessions for 3,405 participants. Of those sessions, 60 were in person, and 16 took place online. BATS also provides significantly discounted training to schools and educational institutions. In this period, of the total training mentioned above, 13 sessions were delivered to schools and served 1258 school-age students. Those trainings were given at a 40% discount from regular pricing for such sessions. Of the sessions we delivered, 13 were pro bono and free to participants in line with our Equity Action Plan and commitment to devote 1% of earned revenue to delivering free activities for underserved minority communities, focusing on low-income BIPOC youth.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
