Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

To be a regionally recognized and nationally influential center of excellence in family theatre: to promote a season of top quality productions; to commission and produce new musicals that achieve national exposure; to train young people in theatre skills for career opportunities and enriched lives; to develop a broad based appreciation for live theatre; to promote positive values through art.

Activities or mission (Part I)

To inspire and enlighten audiences in the Pacific Northwest through professional, top quality live theatre productions; train young people in theatre skills for enriched lives; and support the growth of the musical theatre art form through the development of relevant and significant new works.

  • Mainstage productions focus on excellence in family theatre, developing a broad based appreciation for live theatre and promoting positive values through art. A Mainstage season consisting of a four musicals and one play were produced from September to August at two venues in Issaquah and Everett, Washington. Attendance was 101,116 at 327 performances.

    Expenses $10,727,278 · Revenue $6,381,250

  • Village Originals is a mission-driven program to commission and produce new musicals that achieve national exposure. Through the Village Originals program, new works are produced to various degrees in collaboration with the show's creators. This process helps to foster the growth of new musicals in America and around the world. Village Theatre is one of only a handful of professional theatre companies throughout the country that commissions and develops new musicals. Village Theatre's reputation in this arena continues to grow on a national and international level. Writer's Residencies helps writers to develop ideas, create material, test drafts, provide feedback and receive dramaturgical support. Readings allow writers to hear their piece preformed by professional actors without sets or costumes. Developmental Productions allow the writers to see their piece on stage and in front of an audience with limited sets and costumes. One Development Production was produced during the 2022/2023 season with 7 performances and 1,221 attendees.

    Expenses $712,432 · Revenue $32,197

  • KIDSTAGE trains young people in theatre skills for career opportunities and enriched lives by offering classes and performance opportunities. KIDSTAGE education programs consist of year-round classes and camps; and performance opportunities in two locations: Issaquah and Everett, Washington. Enrollment in classes was approximately 2,380 students. KIDSTAGE produced 10 musicals throughout the year between both locations. An audience of 10,366 attended 84 performances. Some of the performance opportunities are provided at no cost to the students, while others are tuition based with scholarships available.

    Expenses $2,003,875 · Revenue $1,153,143

  • The Everett Performing Arts Center is a separate live theatre facility located in Everett, WA. In addition to our Mainstage productions Village Theatre facilitates a variety of on-stage experiences for Everett audiences, including local chorale groups and children's plays. Expenses include direct expenses associated only with outside arts programming and do not include expenses for Village Theatre programs which are required under the management contract with the City of Everett and which are included elsewhere in the program/service accomplishments. Approximately XXXXX patrons and students attended events at the facility during 2022/2023.

    Expenses $51,331 · Revenue $181,650

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)

Schedule J, Part I, Line 1a
The Artistic Director, Managing Director and Director of Production are given discretionary budget accounts as part of the budgeting process to cover unforeseen expenses that may arise. Transfers must be approved by management and then given to Accounting to transfer the funds from the discretionary general ledger account to the account that requires the needed funds. A relocation expense reimbursement was included as part of the Artistic Director's Employment Agreement for up to $10,000. Receipts were submitted to the Director of Finance for approval before reimbursements were processed. Certain stipulations are included for repayment if the Artistic Director leaves employment within two years of signing their contract.
Schedule J, Part I, Line 3
For the fiscal year ending 8/31/23, the organizations leadership, which consists of the Artistic Director and Managing Director, are reviewed by the Board of Directors. A compensation committee evaluates their salaries at comparable theatres in the National Alliance for Musical Theatre salary survey and selected 990 tax returns for regional theatres in the Seattle area and around the country. The committee brings their compensation recommendations to the full Board for approval. Other key employee's salaries are presented at the finance committee for review as part of the annual budgeting process which is approved by the full Board.
Schedule J, Part I, Line 4
In October 2022, Frank Stilwagner left the organization and received a severance payment in the amount of $34,880.

Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
