Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) is a not-for-profit organization that helps ensure students across the country receive an accurate and effective evolution and climate science education. We do this by supporting teachers with resources and best teaching practices; by monitoring and mobilizing against efforts to undermine science education, whether at the statehouse or in the classroom; and by engaging in research to understand, maintain, and improve science education. NCSE's supporters are scientists, teachers, and citizens with diverse political affiliations.

  • Supporting Teachers: Our teacher support program published 15 lesson sets, freely available to science teachers around the country, that are designed to help students combat common misconceptions about climate change, evolution, and the nature of science. Relatedly, NCSE completed a field test of drafts of the curriculum with practicing science teachers as a way to determine the efficacy of the lessons and revise them as needed. The program also expanded its team with the hiring of one new staff member: a partnership specialist who will serve as mentor to teachers working with NCSE, develop and nurture relationships with local school districts, and assist in curriculum development. In addition, the program continued to send its monthly educator newsletter with resources and other items of interest to more than 6,000 subscribers.

    Expenses $583,300

  • Communications: NCSE serves an important resource for the news media for up-to-date information on threats to the integrity of the science classroom and proactive solutions to helping students better understand climate science and evolution. In 2022, we continued to send our monthly e-newsletter, with a subscriber list of about 25,000. We also sent a quarterly print publication to our supporters, Reports of the National Center for Science Education. The high-production, 16-page publication includes news about our programs, our members, and other articles of interest. NCSE's work was featured in external media such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Education Week, Scientific American, and American Scientist. We ended the year with 161,000 Facebook and 37,000 Twitter followers.

    Expenses $260,401

  • Catalyzing Action: Our longest-tenured program, Catalyzing Action monitors state and local actions affecting science education and is the go-to source for the public generally, and the news media in particular, for up-to-date information on threats to the integrity of the science classroom. By providing advice, resources, and connections, NCSE has a long history and proven track record of success in helping students, parents, administrators, and concerned citizens block threats to accurate evolution and climate education. In 2021, NCSE helped defeat 2 anti-science bills in 1 state and rallied support for quality state science standards in 4 states.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
