Mission and programs · 2024

Mission

The mission of Sojourners is to articulate the biblical call to social justice, inspiring hope and building a movement to transform individuals, communities, the church and the world.

  • Messaging & Media: Sojourners (www.sojo.net) broadens the public dialogue in the United States regarding the intersection of faith, public life and culture. Sojourners articulates a strong moral and religious imperative behind more just and responsible policies. This is done through both national media and our own media platforms (Sojourners magazine, social media, and our digital platforms), and through speaking tours and interviews of Sojourners' President Adam Taylor and other staff. Our digital publication is among the most read Christian social justice publications. More than 1.5 million people from across the world visited Sojourners' website in the last year. We offer analysis, news and commentary on current issues and events, and we produce a number of additional electronic and print resources for pastors and faith leaders.

    Expenses $1,398,428 · Revenue $17,100

  • Mobilization/Organizing Policy: For more than 50 years, Sojourners has been a connecting point for people of faith in this country and globally. Sojourners is challenging racism, xenophobia, sexism, and other efforts to divide us. In FY25, our key issues included countering polarization in churches and communities, resourcing churches to ensure children in the critical 0-3 stage of development can thrive, protecting institutions of democracy, supporting peace and solutions to global conflicts, addressing poverty and inequalities including health inequalities, preventing climate change, among other concerns.

    Expenses $1,357,790

  • Sojourners magazine: Sojourners magazine addresses issues of faith, politics, and culture from a biblical perspective. Sojourners magazine reaches 50,000 readers every month - educating, inspiring, and mobilizing readers to put their faith in action for social justice.

    Expenses $1,356,331 · Revenue $477,929

  • Education Resources: Sojourners provides educational resources through our website. All resources are mission-related. We create and distribute faith-based educational materials about poverty, the environment, racial justice, war and peace, and a range of other issues. Resources are available on our website (www.sojo.net).

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)

Part II, Line 1:
Please see Schedule O, Part VI, for more about the executive compensation process. The following important points should also be noted: 1.The standards the board chose for all Sojourners organizational salaries are based on comparable market rates in Washington, DC for non-profit organizations based on position, size of organization, and years of experience. 2. As required by law, total compensation reported here includes, among other things, the cost of health insurance (an employer-paid benefit provided to all Sojourner's staff), and contributions for retirement and life insurance.

Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
