Mission
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FUTURES, INC.'S MISSION IS TO IDENTIFY AND SUPPORT SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, AND OTHER INNOVATORS WITH AN INTEREST IN SHAPING THE NATIONAL/GLOBAL RESEARCH AGENDA. WE WILL FOSTER, SUPPORT, PROMOTE, AND CONDUCT PROGRAMS, PROJECTS, AND ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO DEVELOP AND ACCELERATE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THROUGH ADMINISTERING RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAMS, WHITEPAPER COMPETITIONS, SCIENTIFIC AGENDA-SETTING ACTIVITIES, AND FISCAL SPONSORSHIP OF OTHER MISSION-ALIGNED ORGANIZATIONS.
-
ALIGN TO INNOVATE (F.K.A. OPEN DATASETS INITIATIVE): ALIGN TO INNOVATE IS WORKING AT THE INTERSECTION OF BIOLOGY AND AI TO IMPROVE LIFE SCIENCE RESEARCH WITH PROGRAMMABLE EXPERIMENTS. THEY USE AUTOMATION AS A FOCAL POINT TO ALIGN THE INCENTIVES OF RESEARCHERS WORLDWIDE TO IDENTIFY AND EXECUTE LARGE, COLLABORATIVE, DATA-INTENSIVE PROJECTS. WE ACCELERATE THESE PROJECTS BY CREATING VENUES FOR AGENDA SETTING, FACILITATING COLLABORATIONS, AND REMOVING TECHNICAL BOTTLENECKS FROM THE ECOSYSTEM. WE AIM TO MOVE THE FIELD TOWARD A NEW PARADIGM OF AUTOMATION-FIRST LIFE SCIENCE RESEARCH.
Expenses $1,369,748
-
PROBABILISTIC PROGRAMMING: THE TEAM STRIVES TO MAKE ADVANCEMENTS IN AI THAT UNDERSTANDS THE WORLD LIKE PEOPLE DO, VIA PROBABILISTIC PROGRAMMING. TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS MISSION, THE PROBABILISTIC PROGRAMMING TEAM MAKES CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FORM OF SOFTWARE CODE, PLANNING, AND STRATEGY TO VARIOUS OPEN-SOURCED TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING GENJAX AND INFERENCEQL WHICH ARE COMPONENTS OF OPENGEN.
Expenses $203,733
-
AI FOR SCIENCE: "AI FOR SCIENCE" PROJECT DISCOVERY IS AN INITIATIVE TO IDENTIFY PROJECTS WITHIN THE "AI FOR SCIENCE" SPACE THAT WOULD ACCELERATE PROGRESS AND SERVE THE PUBLIC GOOD. THIS INCLUDES SURFACING DEMAND FOR SPECIFIC DATASETS, SHARED RESOURCES, AND OTHER HIGH-IMPACT OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BEING ADEQUATELY FUNDED.
Expenses $90,013
-
AI FOR MATERIALS SCIENCE: THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DESIGN AN INITIATIVE THAT WILL USE AI TO ACCELERATE PROGRESS IN MATERIALS SCIENCE USING AN APPROACH CALLED "ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE BY DESIGN." THIS COULD DRAMATICALLY REDUCE THE TIME AND COST ASSOCIATED WITH DISCOVERING NEW MATERIALS WITH NOVEL AND USEFUL PROPERTIES. FOR EXAMPLE, HIGH-TEMPERATE SUPERCONDUCTORS WOULD INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE POWER GRID, AND ADVANCES IN THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS WOULD ALLOW US TO TURN WASTE HEAT INTO ELECTRICITY.
Expenses $34,650
-
OUTER RING: THE PROJECT SUPPORTS THE LAUNCH OF OUTER RING. OUTER RING WILL PROVIDE FUNDING AND INCUBATION SERVICES FOR ORGANIZATIONS DOING WORK IN SUPPORT OF A SAFE, STABLE, AND SHARED FUTURE WITH ADVANCED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. IT WILL SUPPORT PROJECTS IN THE NON-TECHNICAL REALMS OF GOVERNANCE, COMMUNICATIONS, AND LAW, AS WELL AS TECHNICAL PROJECTS SUCH AS EVALUATIONS, STANDARD-SETTING, AND ALIGNMENT RESEARCH.
Expenses $22,500
-
OPEN REACTION DATABASE: THE OPEN REACTION DATABASE (ORD) IS A COLLABORATIVE, OPEN DATA INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT THE STRUCTURING AND SHARING OF ORGANIC REACTION DATA. THIS PROJECT PROVIDES CRITICAL SUPPORT TO INCREASE THE ADOPTION AND IMPACT OF ORD THROUGH PERSONNEL, DATA CURATION, TARGETED DATA GENERATION, AND REDUCING BARRIERS TO CONTRIBUTION. THIS PROJECT INCREASE AWARENESS AND ADOPTION OF ORD, LEADING TO INCREASED DATA SHARING AND CROSS-INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATION IN BOTH DATA GENERATION AND MODEL-DRIVEN REACTION OPTIMIZATION.
Expenses $20,052
-
NUCLEAR ELECTRIC PROPULSION: THE PROJECT SUPPORTS THE ADVANCEMENT OF NUCLEAR ELECTRIC PROPULSION (NEP) TECHNOLOGY FOR BY INCREASING COLLABORATION BETWEEN VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS IN THE SPACE (E.G., GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS, UNIVERSITIES, PRIVATE AND PUBLIC RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS).

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
