Mission

Provide low-cost legal services to immigrants and refugees seeking to make a home in the city of Detroit. Offer low-cost housing to immigrants and refugees who have diffuclty finding long-term residency in the city of Detroit.Assist businesses owned by Detroit residents.

  • With the backing of funding partners, which included, SWDIRC experienced a year of new initiatives and expansion in 2022.This expansion included adding nearly 400 Afghan refugees at the beginning of the year to our roster of immigrant clients. To serve these clients effectively, SWIRC added two additional clinic days reserved to serve these newly arrived Afghan immigrants; recruited new volunteers and doubled the size of our staff team to include: three full-time paralegals; an operations and community outreach manager, and an administrator. We also added equipment, computer software, a new client management system, and developed a comprehensive program to better assess and serve the legal needs of our Afghan clients. Our first goal involved completing immigration applications for each client within three to four office visits. SWIRC also continued to provide services to SApanish-speaking immigrants. In addition to the large number of Venezuelan refugees in 2022. We saw an increase in services provided to Unaccompanied minors, and people from Nicaragua, Colombia, and Cuba. Our focus has been and will continue to be providing services in a timely manner and providing a safe and welcoming space for non-English speaking immigrants to share their stories or past fears and persecution, and to express their hopes for a better life in America.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
