Mission and programs · 2022
Mission
Upward Scholars provides adult immigrants the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and career development support.
-
In 2022, we revamped JobUp, a referral program where we match our students needing flexible short-term or one-time employment opportunities with community members needing student services. In 2022, we also began researching the creation of our newest academic and career development program, TeacherUp. This pilot program, TeacherUp, launches in 2023 and will recruit and assist community members to enroll in college and provide them with wraparound support, including stipends, employer connections, and webinars. Through TeacherUp, Upward Scholars and our partners prioritize increasing the Bay Area early childhood education workforce, especially BIPOC educators.
Expenses $337,358 · Grants $125,574
-
Scholarships are provided to underserved students who have attended adult schools and community-based organizations in San Mateo county to continue their community college education. Upward Scholars provides scholarships for laptop computers, textbooks, course materials, transportation parking, and food vouchers for use in campus dining facilities. In 2022, we expanded these services through additional course materials support, e.g., dental hygiene kits, baking kits.
Expenses $194,119 · Grants $93,894
-
Student Safety Net In 2020, we added a new program to better meet the needs of the people we serve today and meet the future challenges of our changing economic landscape, especially given the pandemic's direct impact on our students. We launched our first-ever student Safety Net Fund (SNF) to support students hardest hit by the pandemic. Students applied to receive support from the SNF to help them cover expenses related to renting, medical care, childcare, utilities, or food, so although they lost jobs and wages, they could continue with their college courses. We've continued to offer this program as a form of retention as well to allow our students to continue prioritizing their academic and career goals.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
