Mission
THE ARTS COUNCIL STRIVES TO ADVANCE GREATER NEW HAVEN BY PROVIDING LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT TO OUR DIVERSE ARTS COMMUNITY. WE ENVISION A THRIVING ARTS COMMUNITY AT THE HEART OF GREATER NEW HAVEN. WE BELIEVE THAT ART, CULTURE, AND CREATIVITY ARE FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS.
Activities or mission (Part I)
THE ARTS COUNCIL CHAMPIONS A DIVERSE, REGIONAL ARTS COMMUNITY WHERE CREATIVITY THRIVES, BELIEVING THAT ART, CULTURE, AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION ARE FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS. AS THE LEADING REGIONAL NONPROFIT ARTS AGENCY, WE PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY FOR ARTISTS AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THE GREATER NEW HAVEN COMMUNITY. ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES ARE 100% FREE FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
-
UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WE ARE HYPER-FOCUSED ON WEALTH CREATION, PAY EQUITY, AND THE ECONOMIC HEALTH OF OUR COMMUNITY. WITH THIS IN MIND, WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED A SALARY INCREASE ACROSS THE TEAM EFFECTIVE JANUARY 2024. THIS STRATEGIC MOVE IS NOT ONLY BECAUSE WE FEEL STRONGLY THAT EQUAL WORK DESERVES EQUAL PAY, BUT ALSO BECAUSE THE PANDEMIC TAUGHT US A LOT ABOUT WHAT IT COSTS FOR INDIVIDUALS, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE CREATIVE SECTOR, TO EFFECTIVELY LIVE AND PROSPER WITHIN THE NEW MORE EXPENSIVE ECONOMY THAT EXISTS TODAY. THEREFORE, THE INCREASED LINE ITEM THIS YEAR HAS GONE ENTIRELY TOWARD PROPERLY SUPPORTING OUR STAFF HELPING TO MAKE STRIDES TOWARDS A HEALTHIER ORGANIZATION.WE ARE ALSO MAKING STRIDES TOWARDS INCREASING OUR GRANTMAKING TO ARTISTS, WITH CONTINUED FOCUS ON ACCESSIBILITY AND EQUITABLY DISTRIBUTING RESOURCES SPECIFICALLY TO SUPPORT FOLKS WHO IDENTIFY AS HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED. OUR GOAL IS TO FOCUS THESE FUNDS ON GENERALLY OPERATING SUPPORT/UNRESTRICTED FUNDING. IN FY24 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MELLON FOUNDATION WE CONTINUED TO SUSTAIN AND GROW OUR ARTIST CORPS RUNNING THROUGH 2025. TWELVE ARTISTS BEGAN WORKING ON PLACE-BASED PROJECTS THAT IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY. THIS VITAL PROGRAM NOT ONLY PROVIDES FUNDING TO ARTISTS, BUT ALSO GIVES THEM MENTORSHIP AND GUIDANCE FOR THEIR ARTISTIC PRACTICE AND PROJECTS. IN ADDITION, THIS YEAR WE RECEIVED ARPA FUNDING FROM TWO CITIES IN CT, WEST HAVEN AND NEW HAVEN, TO REGRANT TO ARTISTS, ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, AND CREATIVE BUSINESSES WITH THE GOAL OF STIMULATING ARTS AND CULTURE ACTIVITY WITHIN THOSE COMMUNITIES.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
