Mission and programs · 2022
Mission
The heart of Boston Ballet is the human experience. Through our living and breathing art, we forge human connections-between artist and attendee, teacher and trainee, friend and newcomer, one's outer and inner self. Dance history is human history, full of innate beauty, generational memory, and contradictions. We share many characteristics that define our city, as global leaders of innovation with a rich heritage and diverse culture. But Boston's history is not perfect-and neither is the history of ballet. In order to heal as a community, we must unite against inequality, inequity, and exclusivity. We are Boston's Ballet. We believe in the transformative power of dance to inspire positive change in our community and beyond. We step toward the future, where our art breaks down barriers, opens minds, strengthens our connections to each other, and is shared more widely with all. Because the future of dance is the future of humanity.Together, we move-forward and farther-as Boston's Ballet.

Ballet Programs: Led by Artistic Director, Mikko Nissinen, the Boston Ballet maintains a diverse repertoire, ranging from full-length ballets to new works by some of today's finest choreographers. The Company typically gives over 100 performances at the Citizens Bank Opera House in Boston, MA during its eight-month season that ends in May of each year. The 2022-2023 season represented the return to this level of performance activity for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, with five season productions in addition to The Nutcracker.

Boston Ballet School (BBS): provides a comprehensive dance education with the goal of inspiring, nurturing and sustaining a life-long love of dance in every student. BBS operates two state-of-art dance facilities at Boston Ballet's headquarters in the South End of Boston and in the Metro-West town of Newton. Several programs are offered to provide educational opportunities to students of all ages and capabilities. The Classical Ballet Program follows a carefully designed curriculum with nine levels of study. It also has a supplemental Summer Dance Workshop and Master Class Series exposing students to different dance concepts and styles in a creative environment. The Children's Program for ages 16 months to 7 years introduces children to the art of dance by promoting the exploration of creativity and expression through movement. Its corresponding summer programs, Ballet Stories and Ballet Journeys introduce students to the wider world of dance. The Adult Dance Program offers a wide range of dance classes and workshops to students of all abilities and experience levels. The BBS Professional Division at Walnut Hill School for the Arts is an audition-only and highly competitive program that provides a rigorous training program preparing students for a professional career with the Boston Ballet, and in the ballet industry. The Summer Dance Program is a 5-week summer intensive training opportunity for students globally, with acceptance to the program by audition-only.

Division for Education and Community Initiatives (ECI): reaches students throughout the Greater Boston area through several pillar programs. Citydance, established in 1991, provides third grade students from over 130 Boston public school classrooms with a tuition-free introduction to dance education. ECI On Location, inclusive of Taking Steps and Boys in Motion, serves students from 4th grade to 8th grade, offering year-long dance education in schools and community sites. Adaptive Dance, established in 2002, provides creative movement instruction to individuals with disabilities. Training workshops are delivered by ECI instructors to organizations locally and nationwide, establishing Boston Ballet as a thought-leader in this space. ECI also engages participants beyond programming by providing special opportunities such as attending Boston Ballet performances and special events/activities, mentoring and teaching, and performing in showcases or community performances.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
