Mission and programs · 2024
Mission
The primary purpose of the UM Center in Far Rockaway is to combat food insecurity in Southeast Queens by providing nutritious meals and pantry staples through our soup kitchen and food pantry programs.
Activities or mission (Part I)
The mission of the United Methodist Center in Far Rockaway is to recognize the value of every person by providing exemplary physical, emotional and spiritual care for each family that graces its door, regardless of race, creed or color. With a balanced commitment to the care of the poor and those most in need, we provide a soup kitchen and food pantry for individuals and families in the Far Rockaway area.
-
The United Methodist Center in Far Rockaway (UM Center) is a vital anchor in Southeast Queens, dedicated to combating food insecurity in a federally designated food desert. Our programs bridge the gap for thousands of individuals and families who struggle to afford nutritious food, providing a stable foundation of support that promotes community health and dignity.Operating twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays), our pantry operates via a client choice model to provide fresh produce, proteins and shelf stable items to individuals and families in need. This approach ensures neighbors receive groceries that will last a minimum of 3 days and meet their household and cultural preferences. In FY 2025, we distributed 6,011 pantry bags, providing essential groceries to 18,912 individuals. In addition to our pantry, our center also offered Monday to Friday, hot nutritious meals for those in immediate need through our lunch and dinner services. Our soup kitchen services provided 26,687 total meals (15,342 lunches and 11,345 dinners) to individuals throughout the year. Beyond food, we have periodic clothing distributions and toy drives to provide additional resources to the community. .

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
