Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

To foster stewardship of Marylands natural heritage by conserving its natural history collections, educating the community and inspiring its youth.

  • Over the course of the year, we were proud to transform our exhibit halls, continue strong education programs, and make advancements in collections, stewardship, and design new community outreach programs. Our popular Ice Age exhibit opened in February, 2024, and introduced Marylanders to the first woolly mammoth skeleton to ever be displayed in our state. This was our first exhibit in decades and drew record numbers of visitors to our museum, where admission remains free during public exhibit hours. Our educational programs and immersive nature experiences 262 in total served more than 6,500 registered participants throughout the year. Public outreach activities expanded, bringing natural specimens and guided interpretation to groups around the region. In short, fiscal year 2024 was an excellent program year.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
