In Hands and Feet of Asheville's primary program, serving as the Asheville site of the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Young Adult Volunteer program, the organization hosted 2 young adult volunteers here in Asheville, each engaging in 32 hours per week of service for 11 months, from September 2022 through July 2023, totaling more than 1,400 hours of service in local Asheville nonprofit organizations. Their community impact included serving free meals from rescued food donated by local area restaurants each week in the 12 Baskets Cafe, which feeds anyone who shows up, as well as offering a place of community, conversation, and dignity for unhoused and housed Asheville residents alike; and supporting Just Economics programs that encourage and certify local employers to pay a living wage, campaign for and help facilitate affordable housing, and work in Asheville communities to improve public transit opportunities in the city. Our volunteers engaged in personal, spiritual, and professional growth throughout around 45 "Friday morning meetings" led by Hands and Feet Executive Director Selena Hilemon, supported by HFA board members and community leaders and specialists, exploring the volunteers' work experiences, YAV house community-building and strengthening, current events, topical experts and social justice related reading, individual relationship styles, conflict resolution, and more; experienced Orientation/Welcome activities plus retreats throughout the program year focused on vocational discernment, the work of intentional communities, and spiritual exploration; participated in around 45 weeks of carefully coordinated meal planning, budgeting, and preparation within their YAV house community while striving for a central "simple living" goal; participated in regular One-on-One volunteer and Executive Director sessions throughout the program, both planned and on an as- needed basis. Our flagship Young Adult Volunteer program expenses represented here include costs of renting living space for the volunteers at the William Black Lodge in Montreat, NC, granting the volunteers a modest living stipend per month, providing orientation to Asheville and retreats away from Asheville, food and programming surrounding every Friday morning meeting, one-on-one session, community partner check-in, and any associated travel expenses.
