Mission and programs · 2022

Primary exempt purpose

The mission of the Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle is to: Preserve and Revitalize the only cast-bell carillon within the City of Cleveland; Enrich Quality of Life in the University Circle Community by transforming the soundscape with music and providing free concert series; Advance Education and Collaboration through the creation of Student Carillon Guilds; and Light a Torch of Creativity by commissioning new music and community events. In 2018, FMC accomplished a major preservation and renovation effort with the $52K+ repair of the carillon's three-bell peal. The organization continues to raise funds to sign a contract for the remaining renovation work while producing concerts and promotional materials to raise awareness of this unique asset of Northeast Ohio. A complete renovation is needed to further the mission.

  • During 2022 Friends of the McGaffin Carillon presented 55 informal lunchtime concerts performed by four different artists. In addition, two artists performed three formal concerts, two on Sunday afternoons, and a sunset concert in August to celebrate the new tower lighting. In partnership with FRONT International 2022: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art we presented 81 daily performances of a work commissioned by FRONT that ran through the entire Triennial: July to October.
