Mission
BACKYARD GROWERS STRIVES TO BUILD HEALTHY, CONNECTED, RESILIENT COMMUNITIES. WE DO SO THROUGH OUR ROBUST SCHOOL PROGRAMMING WHERE WE OPERATE SCHOOL GARDENS, GARDEN PROGRAMS AND TASTE TESTS AT GLOUCESTER'S 5 PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, THE PUBLIC PRESCHOOL AND THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. WE ALSO OPERATE SIX COMMUNITY GARDENS IN GLOUCESTER AND THIS PAST YEAR WE LAUNCHED A COMMUNITY-BASED FARMERS MARKET IN DOWNTOWN GLOUCESTER. WE OFFER A YEAR-ROUND CALENDAR OF WORKSHOPS OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS FOOD ACCESS PROGRAMS THROUGH OUR FARMERS MARKET.
-
BACKYARD GROWERS' SCHOOL GARDEN PROGRAM SERVES ALL SEVEN GLOUCESTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND PATHWAYS FOR CHILDREN, REACHING 100% OF PRE-K THROUGH 8TH GRADE ALONGSIDE GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN OUR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. EACH YEAR STUDENTS HAVE HABIT-BUILDING EXPERIENCES OF GROWING, HARVESTING AND EATING VEGETABLES THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE AIM OF CREATING MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN TO TRY DIFFERENT FRESH, LOCALLY GROWN FOODS AND RAISING A NEW GENERATION OF STUDENTS ENGAGED IN THEIR LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM. OUR COMMUNITY, BACKYARD GARDEN, AND GROWBAG GARDEN PROGRAMS SERVE OVER 400 CAPE ANN RESIDENTS EACH YEAR, INCREASING ACCESS TO FRESH, CULTURALLY MEANINGFUL FOOD FOR LOW- TO MODERATE-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS, SENIORS, CHILDREN, AND IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE FAMILIES BY EMPOWERING THEM TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD. IN JUNE 2024, BACKYARD GROWERS WILL HOST A PLACE-BASED FARMER'S MARKET, CALLED THE BACKYARD GROWCERY, DEDICATED TO CREATING A PLATFORM FOR FOOD ACCESS AND COMMUNITY FOOD-GROWING EDUCATION, WHILE OPERATING IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL FARMS AND SMALL FOOD BUSINESSES TO BUILD A STRONGER FOOD SYSTEM, CELEBRATE COMMUNITY AND FOOD CULTURE IN GLOUCESTER.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
