Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

Production and distribution of films to educate the public on social issues of the past and present.

  • The film Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascotting was completed, and had an amazing year. Along the way, it was honored by the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film, included in The Washington Posts list of best films in 2023, and won Best Picture at numerous film festivals. It had a theatrical run that hit fifteen different cities. Theres more to come with the online educational curriculum (developed with PBS Learning Media and National Indian Education Association) debuting and upcoming availability on iTunes and Amazon in mid-February, 2024. The Foundation also completed sound design, color correction, and the music score for the film A Pocketful of Miracles: A Tale of Two Siblings in which filmmaker and Berlin-born Aviva Kempner chronicles her mother Hanka and uncle Dudek Cieslas lives before and during World War II. It was released in May at the JxJ Film and Music Festival in Washington DC, where it won the audience prize for Best Documentary. The film made its European premiere at the Berlin Jewish Film Festival and was played in festivals in Boston, Miami, Hartford, and Nashville to universal acclaim. The film also had a one-month theatrical run at the Avalon Theater in Washington DC. The film will screen at several universities in 2024 including Penn State, Cornell, and American University. We started working on digitizing our film from 1986 Partisans of Vilna, so a new Partisans Blu-Ray with extra interviews and additional bonus features can be released by the end of 2024. In addition, the Foundation added staff to continue to work on Aviva Kempners latest documentary about Hollywood screenwriter and activist, Ben Hecht. Hecht was initially a Chicago newspaperman, distinguised author, playwright, and Oscar-winning screenwriter from the 1920s through the 1940s. The Executive Director and team filmed interviews with historians and movie scholars for the film in the US and overseas. Intensive research has been undertaken, gathered archival material, and started editing the film. The film will be completed and released by early 2025.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
