Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

RAIN's mission is to promote the growth of the life science and technology industries in Tacoma WA. RAIN provides hands-on educational experiences for local students empowers life science start-ups and small businesses and executes research in our downtown facility.

Activities or mission (Part I)

RAIN is a life-science innovation hub growing talent and jobs in biotechnology.

  • RAIN Education: RAIN Education is focused on hands-on science education for high school and college students in the South Puget Sound region. These programs promote and help develop science-based critical thinking skills and teach laboratory techniques and skills used in biotechnology healthcare and academic research. As the pandemic continued well into 2022 several of RAIN's educational programs remained on hold due to safety concerns; however RAIN used this time to develop curricula including that for a weekly bioengineering program for high school students and a potential synthetic biology club for high school and college students. RAIN also restarted the Superheroes of Science lecture series that brings world-class scientists to present their current research to the community. During 2022 RAIN also expanded its Waterversity program which trains individuals for jobs in the water treatment sector. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be approximately 10,000 job openings each year between 2021 and 2031 in the water treatment fields and these jobs generally pay a living wage and support their communities. Approximately 80 students completed at least one Waterversity course which qualifies them to take the state test to become an operator-in-training. This program is oriented to veterans late high school students those who are looking for a new career field and others.

    Expenses $279,068

  • RAIN Incubator: RAIN works to attract create and or retain small life-science and biotechnology companies in the Tacoma area. RAIN provides access to laboratory spaces networking technical support and consulting. In 2022 five companies utilized RAIN's laboratory spaces. These companies focused on biotechnology logistics contract protein production environmental technologies and process chemistry. These young companies provide internships and essential industry experience for students. This promotes strong relationships that help keep these companies local. RAIN also has a commercial kitchen and during 2022 RAIN hosted eight food vendors who sell products at local farmers and night markets. These small food companies are vibrant members of the Tacoma small business community who create jobs and contribute to the high quality of life in the South Sound region.

    Expenses $122,950 · Revenue $83,613

  • RAIN Research: RAIN Research provides contract services to established firms that align with our mission to provide opportunity in the life-science industry with an emphasis on equity innovation and collaboration. These projects create jobs for interns and trained students provide critical funding for RAIN and generate income for our incubator companies. Additionally during 2022 RAIN continued its critical research into COVID19 virus distribution in Pierce County as well as immunity in people who contracted or were vaccinated against COVID19. RAIN also initiated research on bioengineering of bacteria and detection of environmental DNA from invasive aquatic species in Puget Sound.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
