Mission and programs · 2024

Primary exempt purpose

A global partnership that nurtures and empowers South African communities, especially in the Karoo region, to provide health, education, and nutrition programs for youth. These programs are designed to encourage youth to become healthy, responsible citizens in their racially diverse communities.

  • 2024 was a strong year for Hope in South Africa, Inc's (HISA's) core focus. The soup kitchen and bakery continued to supply youth and adults in need with nutritous meals daily from Monday through Friday. Upgrades were made to the exterior of the Richmond Community Center (RCC) providing increased shade and protection from the elements for soup kitchen patrons. The efforts in the soup kitchen were supported not only by HISA, but also by donations of meat and vegetables from local farmers and community members.Staff continued to make active use of the Computer Center providing computer skills training for adults and children. After school hours, the computer lab serves as a valuable resource of learning and recreational activities for students and others. Activities delivering health education messages relevant to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and HIV/AIDs awareness continue to be a vital part of the RCC cirriculum.

    Expenses $82,750

  • In early 2024 HISA received a shipping container of used bikes. The bikes will be shared by both Richmond and Colesberg. Hope in South Africa has provided critical funding and support for this effort in partnership with several Rotary Clubs. Our goal for 2025-2026 is to establish a bicycle activity area in Colesberg and at the Richmond Community Center (RCC). The shipping container used to transport the bikes, together with a second container, will be located at the RCC for storage and to establish a bike shop for repairs. In 2025, 6 travelers from Frederick, Maryland, including 4 Rotarians, will travel to Richmond and Colesberg to support the bike effort and help implement the program. HISA, in partnership with the Rotary Clubs, will be training community members in both towns to be bicycle mechanics. They will also be teaching children and adults the safety, upkeep, and responsibility of two-vehicle ownership.
