Mission and programs · 2023
Primary exempt purpose
Black Girls Cook aims to empower and inspire inner-city adolescent Black girls through food security, culinary arts, urban farming, entrepreneurship, and STEM, emphasizing Black Diaspora cultural histories and food practices.
-
Black Girls Cook (BGC) has empowered adolescent Black girls in historically neglected communities experiencing disenfranchisement and food insecurity. Through dynamic, hands-on programming, BGC teaches culinary skills, edible gardening, and STEM-focused activities, using food as a vehicle to inspire creativity, self-sufficiency, and community engagement. BGC's commitment to holistic education has grown to include intergenerational learning opportunities, such as generational cooking classes, which foster cultural preservation and family connection. BGC's innovative programs include the Summer of Food, which integrates culinary arts, gardening, and STEM-focused "Kitchen Sink Beauty" activities. By engaging with fresh ingredients and exploring food systems, participants deepen their knowledge of nutrition, sustainability, and food science.
