Mission

The mission of the Houston Area Parkinson Society is to use a whole-human approach to community building, which reduces the fear and isolation associated with a Parkinson's diagnosis.

Activities or mission (Part I)

HAPS serves and advocates for those affected by Parkinson's disease in the Houston Area.

  • Education about Parkinson's disease: The HAPS monthly newsletter, Journey, was sent to more than 6,000 households and email addresses monthly. Both in-person and virtual education programs were offered throughout the year, including three Summer Lecture Series sessions, five Newly Diagnosed Education Program events, and the biennial ENGAGE. EDUCATE. EMPOWER. symposium, ten Community Partners Presents sessions, a Research Fair, Caregiver training workshops, and a balance screening event. Nearly 8,000 hours of education were presented in 2023.

    Expenses $287,916

  • Therapeutic and Enrichment Programs and Support Services: HAPS provided a multitude of speech, exercise, water exercise, tai chi, yoga, dance, ping pong, and boxing classes, as well as support groups each month, with a combined attendance of more than 1,200 hours of service each month in 2023. HAPS offers enrichment programs throughout the year that connect individuals with Parkinson's and their family members to others with the disease. The objective is to create fun social environments that help reduce the isolation individuals living with chronic illnesses often face.HAPS programs are offered free of charge and totaled over 96,926 service hours in 2023.

    Expenses $250,309

  • HAPS social workers handled intake and referral calls, made home visits to assess needs, and conducted consultations to find solutions to address those needs. Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
