  • COMPLETING CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TO PURCHASE FOWLER CLARK EPSTEIN FARM AFTER A VERY SUCCESSFUL TWO-AND-A-HALF-YEAR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UFI ENGAGED NEW DONORS, REACTIVATED LONG-TIME SUPPORTERS, AND ENERGIZED BOARD MEMBERS ENOUGH TO RAISE MONEY TO PURCHASE ITS HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND PROPERTY. WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH ITS LANDLORD HISTORIC BOSTON INC. (HBI) ON THE PRESERVATION AND PERMANENCE SINCE IT TOOK OVER THE FARM, THE ORGANIZATION SECURED SUPPORT FROM PUBLIC, PRIVATE SOURCES AND INDIVIDUAL DONORS TO PURCHASE THE FOWLER CLARK EPSTEIN FARM (FCEF) FREE AND CLEAR. THIS MEANS THAT THE FARMLAND, THE BARN, THE GREENHOUSE AND ITS THREE BUILDINGS ARE OWNED OUTRIGHT WITHOUT LIENS BY UFI. THIS IS A LANDMARK EFFORT FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AS SO MUCH OF THE CITY HAS BEEN COMPROMISED BY GENTRIFICATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS. ADDITIONAL FUNDS WERE USED TO ESTABLISH A DESIGNATED FISCAL RESERVE FUND HELPING TO ASSURE UFI'S FINANCIAL STABILITY. IN 2021, UFI WAS AWARDED A GRANT FROM THE MA CULTURAL FACILITIES FUND, THAT RESULTED IN A DETAILED FACILITIES MAINTENANCE PLAN SO SPECIFIC FUNDS HAVE BEEN, AND WILL BE, RAISED FOR DESIGNATED BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE, LONG-TERM UPKEEP AND NECESSARY REPLACEMENT. THE FCEF PURCHASE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT HELPS SECURE AND IDENTIFY UFI'S LOCALE AS A HUB OF LEARNING AND URBAN FARMING. UFI'S ACTIVITIES IN THE REALM OF CULTURE, CULINARY ARTS, EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND COMMUNITY-BUILDING ARE KEY IN SERVING BOSTON'S NEIGHBORHOODS AND ATTRACTING PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE CITY. FCEF HELPS PROMOTE HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR ALL AGES AND PROVIDES A HEADQUARTERS FOR UFI AND URBAN FARMING FOR THE FUTURE.

The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
