Mission
The Water Collaborative seeks to build a diverse network for all impacted by flood risk by focusing on equitable practices to sustainably live and thrive with water.
-
During the reporting period, our organization made significant strides in advancing equitable stormwater management through the Stormwater Utility Fee program, funded by the Water Justice Fund. We secured substantial funding and established a productive Steering Committee and Public Advisory Group, engaging stakeholders through one-on-one meetings to gather valuable feedback. Additionally, we collaborated with the WaterNow Alliance to develop case studies on best stormwater practices in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Miami. Furthermore, we bolstered our team's capacity by hiring two staff members dedicated to stormwater fee policy and community campaigning. These achievements underscore our ongoing commitment to promoting equitable and sustainable stormwater management practices for a healthier community.

Under the initiative "Water Flows Forward" focused on a Planter Box Competition, our organization achieved significant milestones. To bolster our efforts, we hired six part-time summer fellows for planning and social media management, with one continuing part-time through the remainder of 2022. Additionally, we enlisted the expertise of a branding company to develop branded content for the planter box, devise social media content and strategy, and create a dedicated program website. Collaboration flourished with six formal sponsors/partners, including GreenTheory, National Wildlife Foundation, Cicada Radio, Restore the M.R.D, A.S.L.A-Louisiana Chapter, and C.P.R.A. The competition received an impressive total of 15 design submissions, from which the winning design was carefully selected for installation in tribal communities across Louisiana. These achievements mark significant progress in our commitment to sustainable community development and environmental stewardship.

Our organization embarked on a vital mission to assess water quality and investigate PFAS contamination. We initiated our comprehensive water quality study, leveraging pro-bono technical assistance from former EPA experts and independent technical report writing support from the Center for Applied Environmental Science. To facilitate data collection, we trained and deployed six dedicated fellows, who diligently gathered 31 water samples spanning from Pointe Coupee Parish to Orleans Parish along the Mississippi River. These samples underwent thorough analysis for PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, and BTEX compounds by a nationally certified laboratory, revealing troubling evidence of PFOA, PFOS, PFBA, and ethylene contamination at seven sample sites. To disseminate our findings effectively, we authored two comprehensive reports-one technical and one community-oriented-detailing our study, its implications, and proposing solutions. Our commitment to transparency and community engagement was further demonstrated through in-person and virtual meetings with community members, as well as engagements with the EPA Office of Water and other key stakeholders. Through these endeavors, we remain steadfast in our mission to safeguard water quality and advocate for actionable solutions to address contamination issues.

Our organization launched an innovative Green Tour initiative to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices within our community. With the assistance of three dedicated interns, we meticulously crafted tour scripts, synthesizing valuable information to engage and educate participants effectively. She meticulously designed tour stops for both walking and custom tours, ensuring a comprehensive and immersive experience for visitors. Additionally, Jessica developed a captivating script and recorded a self-guided GPS tour for Voice Maps, enabling individuals to explore at their own pace. To enhance the tour's visibility and impact, Jessica collaborated with a branding company to develop a comprehensive brand guide, logo, and user-friendly website. Through her strategic vision and collaborative efforts, Jessica has established a dynamic platform for fostering environmental stewardship and inspiring positive change within our community.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
