Mission and programs · 2024
Mission
The Organization recruits, trains and supports adult community volunteers who are assigned to advocate for youth, ages 0 through 21, who are in the child welfare or juvenile justice system. These volunteers are often the only consistent adults spending time with and advocating for youth who find themselves in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. The Organization volunteers focus on the needs and best interests of children, providing stability as children and their families navigate traumatic circumstances. Specifically, the mission is to ensure that all children under the protection of the court because of abuse or neglect have a consistent and caring adult who speaks on their behalf and helps them reach their full potential.
Activities or mission (Part I)
The mission of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of San Mateo County is to ensure that all children under the protection of the court have a consistent, caring adult who speaks on their behalf and helps them reach their full potential.
-
In fiscal year 2024, we served 150 kids with 130 volunteers who collectively spent over 10,000 hours advocating for their youth. Volunteers attended 235 court hearings and submitted over 100 court reports. We recruited over 100 potential CASAs and trained 52. Program wise, we increased the number of continuing education trainings and in-person volunteers and youth activities to cultivate volunteer engagement. We ramped up offerings in mental health and education and had a larger number of staff participate in professional development opportunities. CASA gave out over $15,000 in scholarship to youth transitioning out of the system, and over $30,000 in support to all of our youth for enrichment and positive childhood experiences.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
