Mission

Leading Citizen scientists to promote stewardship of sustainable reef communities worldwide.

Activities or mission (Part I)

The Reef Check Foundation is dedicated to the conservation of coral and rocky-reef ecosystems around the world. Our mission is to empower communities at the local level to protect and restore reefs worldwide through grassroots research, conservation, and education efforts. With headquarters in Southern California and locally run chapters all over the world, Reef Check has built a global network of more than 10,000 trained volunteers who monitor reefs in more than 40 countries and territories, resulting in the most extensive standardized, long-term monitoring dataset in the world. One of our key achievements is our role in the establishment and management of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, and Dominican Republic. These MPAs play a crucial role in preserving the biodiversity and health of coral reef ecosystems. Our grassroots approach focuses on training volunteer citizen scientists who collect scientific data and engage in conservation activities rel

  • Reef Check Foundation performs three vital tasks necessary to promote stewardship of sustainable reef communities worldwide: 1) We train and organize teams of local volunteer citizen scientist divers. They collect data on reef health and assess climate change impacts on their reefs. Their work produces reliable information used by marine resource managers, scientists, and policymakers to make science-based ocean management and conservation decisions. 2) We promote public education about reefs and the ocean. Our immersive education programs train participants to understand the threats marine ecosystems face and provide them with the tools to become ocean stewards. 3) We develop ecologically sound and economically sustainable solutions for reef conservation and restoration.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
