Mission
The charitable purpose of Huukuiko, Inc. (Huukuiko) is to support the religious-based cultural preservation and language revitalization activities of the Coast Miwok Tribal Community of Marin and its governing body, the Coast Miwok Tribal Council.
-
PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2024Contracted with Wondjina Research Institute for Phase 2 consulting services to pursue further in-depth, on-site investigation of property sites flagged in Phase 1. (This is in regard to any potential artifacts or other indications of prior Indigenous settlement on Huukuikos land at 1800 Old Rancheria Road, Nicasio, CA.)Participated in and had an information booth at the 2nd Annual Marin Powwow in March.Worked with the Museum of the American Indian in Novato to create and establish a permanent exhibition of Coast Miwok history and artifacts and participated in its grand re- opening in April.Led a guided informational walk for the Environmental Action Committee of West Marins annual fundraising weekend in April.Held a blessing ceremony on and for the land in May, 2024, which included relatives of Council members, other non-affiliated Coast Miwok people, and various representatives and dancers from other tribes.Led informative workshops for both adults and children at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marins annual retreat in San Rafael in May.Held a fundraiser for Huukuiko in conjunction with Marin Shakespeare Company in June at its indoor performance space in San Rafael. Led by Council members, this informative event was open to the public. It included presentations, displays and a 16-page booklet, We Are Huukuiko, which every attendee received. The booklet, a project of the Council, was deliberately over-printed so that copies could be included in the information packets prepared for potential new members.July - November: Organized for the reprint of the booklet at the request of two outside organizations for their own members/participants: the Presbyterian Church of Sausalito (to distribute to the congregation for Indigenous Peoples Day) and the Miwok100K Race (which will take place in May, 2025).Held the traditional Maria Copa Honor Dance on the land in September, 2024. This dance has been sponsored for several years by Council member, Dean Hoaglin, and the invitation is extended to dancers from multiple tribes. This was the first year the Dance was held on Huukuikos land.Ongoing: continued outreach to the larger community of Marin through personal conversations (primarily by Huukuiko president and Tribal Council elder, Joe Sanchez).

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
