Mission and programs · 2025
Mission
TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF THE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
-
SCHOLARSHIP - THERE IS A NATIONAL SHORTAGE OF HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS THAT IS EVEN MORE ACUTELY FELT IN RURAL AREAS SUCH AS WILKES COUNTY. THE HEALTH FOUNDATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN EARNING A DEGREE IN A HEALTH CARE PROFESSION AND THEN WORKING IN WILKES OR SURROUNDING NORTHWESTERN NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES. HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS ARE IN HIGH DEMAND AND TYPICALLY PROVIDE LIVING WAGE JOBS AND CAREER ADVANCEMENT. BY INVESTING IN THESE STUDENTS' PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, WE HELP ENSURE A CARING WORK FORCE TO MEET LOCAL DEMAND. STUDENTS WHO MAINTAIN STRONG GRADE POINT AVERAGES CAN RENEW THEIR SCHOLARSHIP FOR EACH YEAR UNTIL GRADUATION. HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS REQUIRE CLASSROOM, LAB, AND CLINICAL ROTATIONS THAT MAKE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK WHILE ATTAINING THEIR DEGREE, MAKING THE SCHOLARSHIP EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TO THE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO COMPLETE THEIR STUDIES. IN OUR SMALL, RURAL COMMUNITY, IT IS AN ADDED BONUS THAT WE GET TO SEE THESE STUDENTS FIND LASTING EMPLOYMENT IN WORK THEY LOVE WHILE CARING FOR OTHERS.

ACCESS TO CARE - BECAUSE PEOPLE IN RURAL COMMUNITIES FACE NUMEROUS BARRIERS TO RECEIVING ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE DUE TO ITS COSTS, AS WELL AS HAVING TRANSPORTATION TO CONSIDER. THE HEALTH FOUNDATION'S FLAGSHIP PROGRAM IS THE OPERATION OF WEST PARK, A CENTRALLY LOCATED MEDICAL CAMPUS JUST ONE-QUARTER MILE FROM OUR LOCAL HOSPITAL. TENANTS INCLUDE PRIMARY CARE, MEDICAL SPECIALISTS, DENTAL CARE, AND SOCIAL SUPPORT SERVICES. THE CAMPUS CONNECTS TO THE YADKIN RIVER GREENWAY AND HOSTS BOTH A PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUND AND AN ADULT EXERCISE EQUIPMENT ZONE THAT ARE FREE TO THE PUBLIC. THE CAMPUS IS ALSO HOME TO AN INDOOR MEETING SPACE THAT NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS CAN RESERVE FREE OF CHARGE FOR MEETINGS OF UP TO 36 PEOPLE, COMPLETE WITH AUDIOVISUAL CAPABILITIES. THE CAMPUS'S CENTRAL GREENSPACE CAN ALSO BE RESERVED FOR COMMUNITY BENEFIT ACTIVITIES SUCH AS "SAFE KIDS" EVENTS, THE START OF FUNDRAISING WALKS, OR SMALL GROUP EVENTS. THE "WILKES FRESH" MOBILE MARKET HAS ITS FOOD HUB AT WEST PARK AND ITS MOBILE UNIT SELLS AFFORDABLE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THERE. THROUGH GRANTMAKING, WE EXPAND ACCESS TO CARE BY SUPPORTING ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE VITAL SERVICES TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF WILKES COUNTY RESIDENTS.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
