Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.

The filer's explanations (Part III)

PART I, LINE 3
AEA SHARES STAFF, FACILITIES AND OTHER EXPENSES WITH THE INSTITUTE FOR ENERGY RESEARCH (IER), A RELATED 501(C)(3) ORGANIZATION. IER SERVES AS THE COMMON PAYMASTER AND ALL EMPLOYEES ARE EMPLOYEES OF IER INCLUDING INDIVIDUALS REQUIRED TO BE LISTED ON SCHEDULE J. AEA REPORTS ITS ALLOCABLE SHARE OF SALARIES, PAYROLL TAXES, AND BENEFITS, AS REQUIRED, IN THE FORM 990 AND RELATED SCHEDULES. THE PROCESS USED BY IER TO DETERMINE THE COMPENSATION OF THE PRESIDENT IS BASED UPON COMPARABLE SALARIES FOR EXECUTIVES WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE NONPROFIT SECTOR AND IS APPROVED BY THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS. THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORTS TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ALL OF ITS ACTIONS SINCE THE LAST BOARD MEETING. DELIBERATION AND APPROVAL OF THE SALARY IS MADE DURING AN EXECUTIVE SESSION AND INSTRUCTIONS AS TO THE SALARY LEVEL OF THE PRESIDENT ARE MADE IN WRITING BY A MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TO MANAGEMENT. SALARIES FOR TOP MANAGEMENT ARE ALSO BASED ON COMPARABLE SALARIES OF SENIOR LEVEL MANAGERS IN THE NONPROFIT SECTOR USING FORM 990'S FROM COMPARABLE ORGANIZATIONS AS WELL AS PUBLISHED SALARY SURVEYS. THE RECOMMENDED SALARIES ARE PROPOSED TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THEIR APPROVAL. COPIES OF THE SALARY INFORMATION USED IN DETERMINING THE SALARY LEVELS ABOVE AND DOCUMENTS NOTING THE APPROVED SALARIES ARE MAINTAINED AT THE CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS OF IER.

Part I's answers as filed. A line not listed was left unanswered; on lines 1a and 3 that means the box was not checked.
