Activities or mission (Part I)

TO ENSURE A HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION FOR NEW YORK STUDENTS WHO FACE BARRIERS TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS, FOCUSING ON STUDENTS FROM LOW-INCOME BACKGROUNDS.

  • CASE ADVOCACY AND PARENT TRAINING- AFC offers a full range of free individual case advocacy and legal assistance to help young people obtain appropriate educational services. In addition, AFC provides training programs to assist and enable New York City parents and young people to negotiate the Department of Education's bureaucracy and receive the educational support they need to succeed. Training also is provided to school districts, child welfare offices, and other professionals to prepare them to advocate for the education-related needs of the children they serve.

    Expenses $6,535,797 · Grants $577,717 · Revenue $1,412,593

  • PUBLIC POLICY AND RESEARCH- AFC advocates for changes to policy that will improve education for the children we serve. Activities in this program include monitoring the implementation and effects of current policies, producing policy reports, and working collaboratively with other organizations and individuals that share AFC's goals.

    Expenses $1,441,190

  • IMPACT LITIGATION- AFC litigates class action lawsuits and other cases to effectuate systemic reforms of the public school system. The resulting information gathered also assists AFC in monitoring the Department of Education's compliance with the law, which results in the development and implementation of policy that will prevent the same problems from recurring for other children.

    Expenses $373,000

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
