Primary exempt purpose
Kalauokekahuli supports Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families by providing culturally-based prenatal, birth, and postpartum education and services. Kalauokekahuli encourages the healthy growth of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families by supporting and enhancing the well-being of birthing people, parents, and their infants with holistic, multi-generational, and culturally-rooted care regardless of socioeconomic privilege. In doing so, we seek to revitalize and normalize iwi prenatal, birth, and postpartum practices by foregrounding ike kpuna and Indigenous knowledge and by centering the care/support of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families through community outreach. By offering culturally relevant educational classes and workshops, in addition to providing access to high quality prenatal, birth, and postpartum services, we strive to positively influence birth and postpartum outcomes for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

These services will be provided both in-person and virtually, depending on the clients specific needs. Ka Lai o Hauola in-person support includes at least two prenatal visits, physical kookua (birth doula) support, and at least two postpartum visits. Through Ka mana Mentorship Program, Kalauokekahuli endeavors to increase access for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander birthing people to culturally-rooted perinatal education and care by growing our base of Kalauokekahuli Kookua to service our community members throughout Hawaii. The objective of Ka mana Kookua Mentorship Program is to equip cohort members with critical and cultural knowledge and skills required to advocate for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders who are some of the most marginalized and at-risk pregnant, birthing, and postpartum people in Hawaii. To this end, mentees complete rigorous reading and reflection assignments and collective cohort learning geared toward attaining knowledge, while individual mentorship and training opportunities allow for the implementation and practice of acquired knowledge and skills. Our programs and workshops are rooted in the Kanaka Maoli concept of ao aku, ao mai (give knowledge, receive knowledge). As such, we recognize that learning is reciprocal: everyone brings value to the conversation, and depth of knowledge comes from teaching others and experience. Therefore, cohort members are encouraged to share topical knowledge and experiences in addition to receiving the guidance and support of the seasoned Kookua mentor. As an organization rooted in the wisdom of ike kpuna (ancestral wisdom), we have intentionally carved out a space where the work that we do does not simply gesture to cultural competency. Rather, we strive for cultural immersion. And while we honor cultural and generational knowledge, we also recognize the value of contemporary Western techniques and strategies. Ultimately, our dynamic adaptability remains grounded in traditional practices and wisdom while embracing modern multicultural approaches, which allows us to best serve our community. Ka mana Kookua Program is a two-year program with distinct objectives. In Year One, cohort members engage in self study, hands-on instruction, group collaboration and learning, and guided mentorship. In Year Two, cohort members build their personal practice with mentorship guidance by servicing Kalauokekahuli clients. Further, cohort members are also invited to provide assistance to the mentors and mentees in the incoming cohort of Kookua.
