Mission
COMMONWISE EDUCATION, INC WILL PROVIDE ON-LINE EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN THE AREAS OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP,MANAGEMENT, SUSTAINABILITY, ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION TO SOCIAL ENTERPRISE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BUSINESSES, EMPLOYEE AND COOPERATIVELY OWNED BUSINESSES. THESE SERVICES ARE DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE SUCCESS AND VIABILITY OF THESE BUSINESSES.
Activities or mission (Part I)
The Organization coordinates the people, businesses and institutions of the Bronx to develop shared wealth and ownership and supports low income people of color in the decision making process at every step. This network of stakeholders,is known as the Bronx Cooperative Development Initiative (BCDI). Based on a framework of economic democracy, BCDI leverages existing Bronx assets to address economic, social, and environmental challenges within the borough, and supports collective ownership models in order to distribute wealth and decision-making equitably and broadly among Bronx residents.
-
In 2022 BCDI supported the development of Bronxwide community planning and business infrastructure for economic democracy. This took the shape of co-leading a Bronxwide community planning coalition through our Policy and Planning team, convening and supporting Bronx anchor purchasers and small businesses through the BronXchange, and educating community leaders on models and projects for deepening shared ownership and shared wealth in our communities through the Economic Democracy Learning Center. A signature piece of BCDIs work is co-leading a coalition of 12 community, faith, and labor organizations for a Bronxwide Plan: a long-term Bronxwide economic development plan grounded in racial justice and economic democracy. Our BCDI team analyzed feedback on projects and priorities from our 2021 community planning assemblies and launched an online platform for gathering and focusing project ideas that either already exist in the Bronx or could exist in the future. This was done using Consider. It, an internationally recognized tool for democratic dialogue and deliberative decision-making, and was supplemented with in person meetings in neighborhoods and with organizational partners across the borough. Our business development work through the BronXchange convened local institutions interested in purchasing local and supported Bronx small business. Our work this year connecting minority-owned small businesses with contracts that grow their revenues, taught us how to better support small businesses, and built a larger network for collective purchasing among mission-driven institutions in the Bronx. We led a visibility campaign for Black-led businesses and cooperatives in the Bronx that generated media attention for cooperatives, framing this approach to business as key to race and gender equity, as well as visibility for the specific Bronx-based cooperatives themselves. For our learning and education work, we supported high school students and educators from five Bronx high schools in deepening their understanding of economic democracy. Students and educators attended field trips and guest lectures from entrepreneurs and cooperative community development leaders from the Bronx and across New York City, used this new understanding to author a report identifying how their schools can continue to embed learning and action around democratic community development in their schools. This report was complemented with broader public webinars and in-person meetings where our community partners were invited to listen and learn from peer organizations organizing around democratic development in their own communities, including Los Angeles and Chicago.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
