Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

The purpose for which this corporation is organized is: To act on behalf of the public interest by means of charitable, educational, or any other activities within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Within these general purposes, the specific purposes include research and public education in the following areas: consumer protection, health and safety, environmental protection and preservation, energy policy and transportation, promotion of democratic processes, corporate and governmental accountability, and other issues of concern to the people of North Carolina and elsewhere.

Activities or mission (Part I)

When consumers are cheated or the voices of ordinary citizens are drowned out by special interest lobbyists, North Carolina Public Interest Research Group Education Fund, Inc. speaks up and takes action. We uncover threats to public health and wellbeing and fight to end them using time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposes, grassroots organizing, and litigation.

  • Researching and influencing public policy: staff engage in non-legislative activities including research, education, and policy development to stop the pollution of single-use plastics, promote consumer protection by strengthening regulations around product safety and working to give citizens the right to repair their own devices.

    Expenses $63,746

  • Public education & outreach: recruiting volunteers, distributing educational literature, conducting surveys and discussing issues with the public to stop the pollution from single-use plastics, promote consumer protection around product safety and working to give citizens the right to repair their own devices.

    Expenses $27,319

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
