Mission and programs · 2022

Mission

The mission of the Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge shall be to educate the public regarding the flora, fauna, and natural environment of the Refuge, through functions and educational events, promote public support for the Refuge by encouraging and organizing volunteer services, and solicit public donations for use in supporting, assisting, and enhancing ongoing conservation projects on the Refuge.

  • In 2022, the Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (FLANWR) participated in outreach and education, land conservation, and habitat restoration for ocelots. Outreach and EducationIn 2022, FLANWR hosted 18 events for approximately 3,300 individuals. We also introduced some new youth programs. Programs and events in 2022 included: Ocelot Conservation Day, the Wild Friends Storytime, the Friends Science Series, a National Public Lands Day Cleanup, Walk for the Wild, National Wildlife Refuge Week, and the Bahia Grande: The Largest Coastal Restoration in Texas Summer Movie Series. In May 2022, the Visitors Center at Laguna Atascosa opened after an over two-year closure. This allowed FLANWR to reopen the Nature Store and provided a place for outreach and education to start up again. The biggest event we hosted in 2022 was the Ocelot Conservation Day. Ocelot Conservation Day is an annual event the first weekend in March co-hosted by FLANWR and the USFWS that promotes ocelot conservation. This awareness-raising event highlights the ocelot, a small endangered wild cat native to South Texas. Activities included craft stations and information tables where guests may speak with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge representatives to learn about ocelot biology, research, and conservation. Representatives from Defenders of Wildlife and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department were also present. On March 6, 2022, the 18th annual Ocelot Conservation Day was held at Gladys Porter Zoo. This year had a different layout than other years, with booths and activities placed throughout the zoo rather than at the South Texas Discovery Center. Presentations were done at the newly remodeled outdoor amphitheater. The placement throughout the zoo allowed us to engage more of the zoo patrons than in previous years. Zoo staff estimate we reached more than 3,000 people. In 2022, we also added new activities that appealed to kids. These included: pin the tail on the ocelot, ocelot bean bag toss, how far can an ocelot jump, green screen photographs, and ocelot puzzles. Land AcquisitionIn 2022, FLANWR transferred 50 acres of land to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This land will become part of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. The goal of FLANWR land acquisition is to assist the Refuge and partners to acquire smaller pieces of land in a timely manner so they can be conserved for wildlife. The land we transferred included a 10-acre parcel acquired in 2018 and a 40-acre parcel acquired in 2019. Both tracts of land are located on Buena Vista Road. FLANWR plans to continue assisting the Refuge with land acquisition and due diligence costs to assist with the Bahia Grande Coastal Corridor Project, which aims to link parcels from various sections of the Refuge together to provide habitat connectivity for wildlife.Habitat RestorationIn 2022, FLANWR also assisted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services South Texas Refuges Complex Habitat Restoration Program with thornscrub habitat restoration for ocelots. We assisted the US Fish and Wildlife Service by providing funding for habitat restoration at the 110-acre Delaney Farms tract. FLANWR assisted by contracting a company to plant 10,480 tree-band trees with a 3 ft. tree shelter around them and 109,446 tree band trees without shelters.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
