Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

Our impact in 2023 is remarkable and a testament to those who support our work. In 2023 NET has planted and maintained over 10,000 trees and plants, distributed over 1,400 free shade and fruit trees, stewarded 135 acres of habitat, grew over 1,200 native plants at our native plant nursery, created and facilitated over 4,500 volunteer hours in community-based greening activities, visited over 1,700 homes for tree surveying or follow up, created and sustained over 152 active community partnerships, and hosted 62 community-based events.

Activities or mission (Part I)

North East Trees (NET) heals decades of environmental injustice and disinvestment through community-based urban forestry, nature-based design-build of parks, community engagement, and youth workforce development. Our projects, which take place in parks, schoolyards, public housing developments, and the City right-of-way, benefit communities that are disinvested, overburdened, and historically under-served. We are LA's oldest design-build non profit and a recognized leader across the State for actualizing grassroots community ideas to achieve sustainable climate-resilient projects. We've built the necessary trust to facilitate robust community-driven processes, empowering residents to have leadership and input into designing parks and green space for their communities. We envision a Los Angeles that is greener, healthier and more climate-resilient.

  • NET's Parks and Open Space Program designs and builds public parks and green spaces and implements water conservation projects following Nature Based Solutions and Low Impact Development design principles. For example, the installation of bioswales helps water travel on paths so it can penetrate the earth before it runs off to the streets and into storm drains. Schools, agencies, foundations, and the City and County of Los Angeles are among the beneficiaries of NET's work eliminating invasive species, planting drought resistant native plants and trees to restore the habitat, and installing site attributes such as playgrounds, public information signage, landscaping and boulders, sidewalks, and drinking fountains.

    Expenses $599,942 · Revenue $15,935

  • NET's Urban Forestry Program focuses on expanding the Los Angeles urban tree canopy to help cool down and beautify under resourced communities. NET plants and maintains street trees along neighborhood streets and gives fruit and shade trees to residents. These trees provide not just the emotional health benefits urban green spaces support, they help manage stormwater and reduce urban heat, which in turn decreases energy costs. Through outreach, education and workforce development, NET teaches people how to plant and care for their trees, about the importance and benefits of trees, and how to develop and care for their urban forest.

    Expenses $1,449,860 · Revenue $35,548

  • Other Programs included land stewardship, management, open space conservation and opertating a nursery.

    Expenses $449,957 · Revenue $71,096

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
