Mission

The mission of Heartland Chamber Music (HCM) is to connect, engage, and inspire students of all ages and backgrounds through a lifetime of music education and performance.

  • The Heartland Chamber Music (HCM) Festival, in collaboration with the Midwest Trust Center, achieved record-breaking enrollment for its summer festival held at the Johnson County Community College campus. With 21 esteemed faculty members, HCM welcomed 105 students ranging from ages 7 to 50, representing diverse geographic regions across the United States. Distinguished by the presence of the award-winning Parker as our quartet in residence, the festival also featured the esteemed concertmaster of the Kansas City Symphony, Jun Iwasaki who conducted a masterclass and provided guidance to our 8 full scholarship recipients, known as Festival Scholar students. Additionally, HCM generously awarded 36 students financial aid, the majority based on merit. Throughout the festival, students showcased their talents in five concerts, captivating audiences with their musical prowess. Furthermore, 20 students had the opportunity to perform on Kansas Public Radio, further amplifying their exposure and celebrating their achievements.

    Expenses $92,476

  • In August, String Sprouts resumed its mission of providing free instruments and lessons to underserved communities, ensuring equitable access to music education. Operating across various sites throughout the metropolitan area, Sprouts served a total of 69 students and their caregivers/parents across six locations, including partnerships with the KCK and KCMO public school districts, as well as El Centro Academy. As part of a collaboration with the Kansas City Public Schools, Sprouts engaged 48 students in twice-weekly classes during the school day. Throughout the year, students learned a total of 69 pieces of music, showcasing their progress and dedication. Quarterly Sprouting Up ceremonies featured 32 guest performances by 21 esteemed musicians from the Kansas City Symphony, captivating approximately 265 attendees. The highly anticipated Sprouts & Symphony concert, featuring 62 Sprouts performing alongside the UMKC Conservatory Orchestra, drew an audience of over 300. At the annual Stringfest fundraiser, 12 students showcased their talents to an audience exceeding 175 attendees. Additionally, 58 Sprouts participated in four concerts alongside the Kansas City Symphony during the Edward Jones Holiday concert series, further showcasing their musical achievements and enriching the community with their performances.

The HCM Adult Workshop presents an exciting opportunity for adult amateur musicians to delve into the masterpieces of chamber music. Open to string, wind, and keyboard players aged 21 and over, this intensive four-day workshop attracted 15 students from across two states. Faculty members from the Kansas City Symphony and local universities guided participants through the workshop's activities.
