Mission
Black Californians United for Early Care and Education is committed to disrupting and abolishing over 400 years of intentionally designed institutional and systemic racism. We work to ensure California's ECE system is culturally affirming for Black children, families, and early educators, and that ECE policies and resource allocation are aligned to match our vision.
-
Organizational Capacity Building: We continued to build capacity of our organization, building to a staff of 6 people, 3 of them full-time. Our executive director completed an 8 month training program for new EDs, and had 1:1 coaching sessions for leadership development. With co-founders and Wisdom Circle members, we also refreshed our strategic plan priorities. We also invested in IT systems to streamline processes.
Expenses $343,743
-
An important focus of BlackECE is to advocate for California's youngest Black children, their families and Black child care providers. We were invited to join the steering committee of the Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation and Truth. Our workshop proposal for National Associaiton for Family Child Care was accepted, and we began planning our first symposium on research, policy and practice.
Expenses $8,119
-
Child Care Provider Support: We hosted virtual monthly meetings which had up to 30 child care providers participating. We also included them in training on BlackECEs core messaging. They also went to Sacramento to share their stories with legislators and give comment at a budget hearing. We also provided gift cards over the year to encourage their self-care. Our advocates also presented at conferences like NAFCC in St. Louis, to share how important it is to advocate as a Black early educator. 10 Lift Every Voice advocates were able to travel, with all expenses covered.
Expenses $112,007
-
Incentives for child care providers to participate in programming.
Expenses $5,023
-
Policy advisement
Expenses $5,260
-
We launched our first activity to uplift cultural affirmation in early learning spaces, the Black Family Culture Kit. The kits are a series of four that include products and activities that are developmentally appropriate and help families and other adults affirm Black culture with their young children. We also launched our Black Family Cookout in three California locations, bringing together families and children and early educators to build community. Finally, we launched our first Symposium on policy, practice and research, sharing with attendees the main tenets of our strategic plan.
Expenses $96,094

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
