Mission and programs · 2024
Primary exempt purpose
As an arts nonprofit, we focus on providing community based arts education and engagement opportunities, with a focus in serving underserved communities
-
In 2024 our main programming included: Teatro en El Verano: In partnership with Trinity Repertory Company, RILA presented Teatro en El Verano, a bilingual touring theater program that brought free, family-friendly performances to Latino neighborhoods across Rhode Island. The performances promoted cultural pride and accessibility to live theater for Latinx and bilingual communities. Over 1,200 audience members attended the summer performances. Broad Street Stories & Nuestras Raices Oral Histories Program: RILA continued its work to collect and preserve Latino oral histories through storytelling events, interviews, and a digital community archive. With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a student Fellow was funded to assist in archiving, digitizing, and organizing RILA's growing Latino oral history collection. These stories were shared at public events, in community workshops, and through media partnerships. Public Art Projects: Through a contract with LISC-RI, RILA managed the creation of two community murals designed and painted by Latinx artists. These projects engaged residents in the design process and served as a platform for intergenerational dialogue and neighborhood pride. The program included a coordinator, paid artist stipends, and community unveiling events. $2,000 in restricted funds were reserved for mural maintenance into 2025. In addition to these major initiatives, RILA offered: A Summer Art Camp for youth, with scholarships provided through PPAC Guided historical and cultural tours of Latino neighborhoods Public exhibits celebrating Latino history and heritage Total program service expenses: $100,000 (estimate based on program-related costs including artists, contractors, supplies, and fellowship) and Museo del Barrio community programming led by Latinx artists in outdoor settings including Broad Street, South Providence.
