Mission and programs · 2023
Primary exempt purpose
Urban Nature Partners PDX empowers youth from historically marginalized Portland populations by building connections to nature and community through long-term mentoring relationships.
-
In 2023, we served 17 youth ages 9 to 15, alongside their siblings and parents from 15 families in three economically and racially marginalized Portland neighborhoods. We continued our partnership of 7 years with our local Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter and added two new mentoring organizations-Holla Mentors and Family of Friends-for a total of approximately 75 youth and family members served alongside their adult mentors. In addition to youth participating in weekly or bi-weekly outdoor outings with their mentors, we provided 16 outdoor group outings that prioritized BIPOC-led and culturally specific programming, adding climate change study and forest bathing activities to our regular suite of outdoor recreation, seasonal harvests, outdoor skills and environmental education, and service projects. In 2023, 11 UNP youth attended 50 days of summer and fall nature-based camps with 6 long term partners-exploring their neighborhoods by bike, learning salmon conservation from indigenous partners, making nature art at the coast, and learning wilderness survival skills. Finally, in 2023 we continued to refine our second strategic plan, focusing on relationships, equity, and youth empowerment as the overarching goals for our programming.
