Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

PRODUCING AND DEVELOPING PLAYS AND MUSICALS.

  • Transport Group is a New York-based, off-Broadway theatre company that stages new works and radically reimagined revivals by American writers. Co-Founded in 2001 by Jack Cummings III & Robyn Hussa, Transport Group is currently run by Cummings as Artistic Director and Executive Director, Denise Dickens. We produce plays and musicals; new works and revivals. For over twenty years, Transport Group has crafted risk-taking, thoughtful, acclaimed productions of plays and musicals that widen the lens on our American experience. By centering unlikely protagonists, embracing nontraditional casting, and incorporating daring design, we create unexpected theatrical experiences that allow audiences and artists to collaboratively explore what we mean by an American identity. In the span of two decades, we have produced thirty-five shows: seventeen new works, eighteen revivals, fourteen world premieres, six commissions, and three New York premieres. Each year, Transport Group aims to mount two American plays or musicals in mainstage Off-Broadway productions. When planning our season, we take into account the scope and scale of each work, always prioritizing artistic integrity and high-quality production values. Each season also includes extensive development processes for new works and revivals alike that put artistic exploration at the forefront. We produce readings, developmental labs, workshops, concerts and other special events. Productions are attended by 4,000-8,000 people annually and other one-night concerts, events and workshops attract an additional 500-800 people annually. Our audiences are theatergoers in the new york tri-state area. Our 2022/2023 season featured our second collaboration with the National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO). Transport Group produced the first off-Broadway revival of Edward Albees Pulitzer Prize-winning play, A DELICATE BALANCE. In A DELICATE BALANCE, Agnes and Tobias, a wealthy middle-aged couple, have their complacency shattered when their longtime friends appear at their doorstep, claiming an encroaching fear has forced them from their home. Transport Group and NAATCO's production of A DELICATE BALANCE is an equal representation of both companies, with both artistic leaders at the helm - Jack Cummings III as director and Mia Katigbak in the role of Agnes. As a part of our community outreach for A DELICATE BALANCE, we curated a virtual conversation with the cast and creative team, and three talkbacks moderated by NYU professor Michael Dinwiddie. Unfortunately, three additional talkbacks planned as part of this engagement were cancelled due to COVID-19. For the third year in a row, we will continue artistic development under The Joanna & Steven Sanders New Works Program. This program offers tailored support to playwrights, librettists, and composers through every step of the creative process, culminating in a fully realized production. We continued developing SPLIT, conceived and book by Michele Lowe with music and lyrics by Zoe Sarnak, with a three-week workshop in July 2022. Further development of this piece will continue with an industry presentation this March 2023 in advance of its world premiere in 2023/24. We will conduct a reading of Michael John Lachiusas BEAUTIFUL JOLIE GABOR, HER GLAMOROUS THREE DAUGHTERS, and ALWAYS THE HAPPINESS IS LIFE. We will also present readings of Jack Cummings adaptation of MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, and a newly commissioned play by Harrison David Rivers. This season, we will offer a series of concerts honoring great American musicals. In December 2022, we presented ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE: A STAGE ADAPTATION starring OBIE Winner Donna Lynne Champlin stars as George Bailey. Our annual Anne L. Bernstein Concert Series will take place in June 2023. The evening will include behind-the-scenes stories of each shows development process for its debut production, featuring special guests connected to the original stars and creators. WE WILL BE HOSTING OUR ANNUAL GALA CELEBRATION ON April 24th AT THE Edison Rooftop. This year we will honor Barbara Andres, Donna Lynne Champlin, Michele Pawk, and Mary Testa. We anticipate roughly 200 guests.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
