Mission
ESTABLISHED IN 1953, THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF THE NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA (UNA-NCA) IS AMONG THE LARGEST AND MOST ACTIVE CHAPTERS OF THE UN ASSOCIATION OF THE USA, SERVING THE VIBRANT AND DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, MARYLAND, AND NORTHERN VIRGINIA (DMV), WITH OVER 1,000 MEMBERS. UNA-NCA STRIVES TO ADVOCATE FOR THE UNIVERSAL VALUES CODIFIED IN THE UN CHARTER, LOCALLY IN THE DMV AND GLOBALLY; SUPPORT AND EDUCATE FUTURE DIPLOMATIC LEADERS; AND ADVOCATE FOR EFFECTIVE ENGAGEMENT BY THE U.S. MISSION TO THE UN.
Activities or mission (Part I)
TO REACH OUT TO NATIONAL & LOCAL CITIZENS, & OUR GOVERNMENT LEADERS TO EDUCATE, MOBILIZE, & INSPIRE AMERICANS TO SUPPORT THE PRINCIPLES & VITAL WORK OF THE UNITED NATIONS
-
Empowering the next generation of global leaders through Model United Nations Using an original curriculum, year-round programming, and Model UN simulations, Global Classrooms DC (GCDC) program prepares the next generation of global citizens by engaging middle and high school students across the DMV region in a comprehensive global education experience. GCDC reached 1335 students and 70 educators across 61 schools during the 2023-2024 school year and is focused upon increasing the participation of students enrolled at Title 1 schools (currently account for 17.6% of all GCDC participants). Bringing professional development opportunities to students and young professionals Over 60% of UNA-NCA membership is comprised of young professionals and students. UNA-NCA's Young Professionals Program (YPP) provides a unique forum for learning about international issues, engaging in professional development, and participating in mentoring opportunities. The YPP's career dinners is the signature program, engaging students, young and mid-career professionals with field experts in a variety of areas. Advocating for the UN and its agencies The Advocacy program engages senior leaders and the public alike in various initiatives to support U.S. leadership in the UN. This includes training and outreach to congressional leaders as well as local advocacy initiatives. UNA-NCA successfully advocated for the passage of local legislation that embraces the UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women in the Greater Washington area. Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals The Global Goals at Home (GGH) program utilizes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework for localizing and contextualizing impact across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The program's interactive platform offers stakeholders new ways of collaborating, exchanging resources, and advancing their shared goals. GGH has secured over 50 partner organizations interested in using the program's platform. GGH started a partnership collaboration with Accenture, Inc. Celebrating UN Day with high-level programming Each year, UNA-NCA commemorates the October anniversary of the United Nations through special programming involving high-level speakers who engage in a discussion of relevant issues. Deepening graduate students' understanding of the UN The Graduate Fellows Program (GFP) guides graduate students from through a semester-long exploration of the UN. The program engages graduate students from DMV-area universities in a weekly seminar alongside senior U.S. and UN officials to discuss pressing UN-related issues. Honoring champions of human rights Each December, UNA-NCA hosts its Human Rights Awards Reception commemorating the UN General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by presenting awards to individuals and organizations that have made substantial contributions in the field of human rights, globally and locally.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
