Mission and programs · 2023

Mission

The Equal Justice Society is transforming the nations consciousness on race through law, social science, and the arts. Our legal strategy aims to broaden conceptions of present-day discrimination to include unconscious and structural bias by using social science, structural analysis, and real-life experience. Currently, EJS targets its advocacy efforts on school discipline, special education, and the school-to-prison pipeline, race-conscious remedies, and inequities in the criminal justice system. EJS also engages the arts and artists in creating work and performances that allow wider audiences to understand social justice issues and struggles.

Activities or mission (Part I)

The Equal Justice Society is transforming the nation's consciousness on race through law, social science, and the arts.

  • Law and Policy: Challenging Obstacles to Equal Opportunity in Law and Policy. We continue to articulate how implicit bias and structural racism operate in our society and why the "intent doctrine" serves as an obstacle to racial justice. We continued to train judges and lawyers in cutting edge theories of discrimination law by convening social scientists and legal scholars in workshops.Over the years, we defended equal opportunity programs in public institutions filing amicus briefs or intervening directly in current litigation.

    Expenses $829,315 · Grants $3,342 · Revenue $433,824

  • Communications Strategy: Heightening Racial consciousness in the Media and Public Discourse. We organized and facilitated a number of presentations to advance a national, proactive agenda for equal opportunity. Our president, Eva Paterson, continued to be in demand as both a speaker and panelist at national convenings of legal and other organizations.

    Expenses $295,280

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those. A Schedule J breakdown is as filed: base pay, bonus, other, deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits from this organization, with any from related organizations beside each, and the filer's own total. It is shown with the Part VII listing of the same name on the same return. The form gives no key between the two, so that pairing is ours, and is marked matched by us.
