Mission
WE RESCUE SHELTER DOGS, START TRAINING THEM IN PRISON HOUSED PROGRAMS, PAIR THEM WITH MILITARY VETERANS AND FIRST RESPONDERS DIAGNOSED WITH VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE WOUNDS AND CONTINUE TRAINING THEM TOGETHER TO BE SERVICE DOGS AND QUALIFIED HANDLERS. DOING THIS WE ARE RESCUING ONE TO HEAL ANOTHER.
-
In 2024, Blue Star Service Dogs welcomed 27 Veterans and 2 First Responders into our service dog training program, successfully enrolling 82% of applicants. We introduced 15 students to our STAR Program and included 9 participants in our "Bring Your Own Dog" (BYOD) program.Through our STAR Program, we rescued 18 dogs from shelters across Michigan, placing them in the Saginaw Correctional Facility in Freeland and Thumb Correctional Facility in Lapeer. Additionally, six puppies were donated by a breeder, and were enrolled in the prison program for extended training for later pairing with a Veteran or First Responder. Our prison program involved 52 inmate handlers who provided foundational obedience and pre-task training. Blue Star Service Dogs trainers visited the prisons weekly to guide handlers, assess each dog's progress, and support effective training. In 2024, we proudly celebrated the graduation of 12 service dog teams.

Our education program engages organizations, schools, corporations, and public events to raise awareness about service dog laws and proper etiquette. We also collaborate with businesses to clarify their rights concerning unqualified or "fake" service dogs, helping protect their spaces and programs while ensuring non-discriminatory practices toward individuals with disabilities. In 2024, we completed 47 presentations, supporting our veterans and first responders in navigating civilian life and reconnecting with family, employers, and their communities.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
