Mission and programs · 2022
Primary exempt purpose
Portland Youth Theater's primary exempt purpose is to unlock self-discovery in young people through the transformative power of theater. Our programs reach hundreds of kids each week in our venue and in schools throughout our community, providing a safe, nurturing and happy environment in which kids can create theater while learning about themselves and the world around them.
-
INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES - Kids of all ages, abilities, and experience levels participated in a full season of all-student, public performances of musicals and plays. In 2022, we resumed in-person instruction in our studio, as well as performances for live audiences for the first time the beginning of the COVID pandemic began. This program served approximately 350 studio students, and about 1,200 audience members during our 2022 season.
-
IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES - Teaching artists develop and deliver customized performing arts programming to take place in public schools, independent schools, and homeschool programs. During 2022 we were able to deliver programming directly to students in their classrooms for the first time since the Pandemic began. We served approximately 550 students in grades K through 8 through these residency programs during this school year.
-
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: STAGES teaching artists and staff members provide no-cost workshops, classes, and other educational programs for schools, local businesses, neighborhood associations, and other community organizations. This type of outreach exists in a variety of forms including participation in festivals/fairs, theater/arts or kid-centric events, career fairs for middle and high school students, library programs, etc. We reached approximately 1,200-1,500 additional kids, families, and community members during 2022 through this outreach work.
