Mission and programs · 2024
Primary exempt purpose
Telling My Story is a non-profit organization that breaks down walls between socially isolated individuals and their communities through collaborative creative engagement. We use theater and the arts as a medium for social reflection and relationship building. Our programs develop self-awareness and communication skills with populations behind visible and invisible social walls such as those created by incarceration, addiction and poverty. Through writing and performing, people behind walls are empowered to reclaim their own voices and strengths.

Telling My Story at CoSI: Being with Others in Wonder and Awe was a program run for the workers of the CoSI (Church of Safe Injection) organization in Lewiston, ME. From January until March of 2024, the group met with Pati Hernández twice a week for 21/2 hour sessions. By practicing listening, speaking and withholding judgment in the group, the participants built and strengthened relationships based on trust, communication, and dialogue. We did activities that brought us together in the effort to dismantle the visible and invisible walls of preconception and bias that surround us, which many times we actively and/or passively help to create and maintain. Throughout our time together we focused on strengthening the community to empower the work the organization does providing the services to a community that is so invisible to our society. At the end, the group shared testimonials, wrote a manifesto, and built a powerful Talking Wall that was on display for many months in their space.
