Mission and programs · 2022
Mission
The Bushwick Starr is an Obie Award-winning nonprofit theater that presents an annual season of new performance works. We are an organization defined by both our artists and our community, and since 2007, we have grown into a thriving theatrical venue, a destination for exciting and engaging performance, and a vital neighborhood arts center serving the diverse artistic needs and impulses of our Bushwick, Brooklyn community. We provide a springboard for emerging professional artists to make career-defining leaps and maintain a sanctuary for established artists to experiment and innovate.
-
The Bushwick Starr's 22-23 Main Stage Season included the world premieres of: THIS AND THAT by Phil Soltanoff + Steven Wendt (Sept. 7-25 2022 at the Chocolate Factory Theater in Queens, remounted Dec. 8-17 at HERE Arts Center in Soho); DARK DISABLED STORIES by Ryan J. Haddad (Feb. 28-Apr. 8 2023 at the Shiva Theater at the Public Theater); and demons. by Keelay Gipson (May 10-June 3 2023 at The Connelly Theater in the East Village). All three productions were popular and critical successes - in particular, DARK DISABLED STORIES received Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Drama League nominations and awards. We also partnered once again with Center for Performance Research in Williamsburg to host our annual Starr Reading Series. This season we selected 6 scripts which underwent developmental rehearsal time and were presented in free public performances for 425 audience members in March/April 2023. Presented playwrights included: Marissa Joyce Stamps, Alba Delia Hernndez, Divya Mangwani, Daniella De Jess, Maya Lawson, Jess I. Valles. We also underwent 5 developmental workshops for upcoming Main Stage works as well as artists of interest for future seasons including Michelle J. Rodriguez, Phillip Howze, Marie Thomas, Softee, and Jon Riddleberger. The Starr's education programs included Big Green Theater for elementary students with PS018, PS075, PS106K; Creating Performance for local teens with El Puente Bushwick; and Senior Storytelling with Round Table and Ridgewood Bushwick Older Adults Center. In addition we returned to Maria Hernandez Park on August 21 2022 with our Summer Arts Festival with Oye Group featuring free arts activities and performances.

Compensation is as filed in Part VII: reportable pay from this organization and from related organizations, other compensation, and hours per week. The total, marked calculated, is our sum of the three dollar columns, with a blank column counted as $0; the form itself has no total. On a Form 990-EZ the columns are Part IV's instead, and on a Form 990-PF Part VIII's — compensation, contributions to benefit plans, and expense account — and the total sums those.
