Primary exempt purpose
Futures For Standardbreds accepts donated Standardbreds that are no longer racing for a variety of reasons, and also rescues them from situations that will lead to inhumane treatment. The horses must be sound and retrainable for pleasure disciplines, and placement in a responsible home.
-
To get to retiring Standardbred horses before their future is uncertain. Cyclone Pass is a 14 year old whose owner died in the spring. The owner made arrangements for the horse to go to a trainer he knew would take good care of him (and the trainer did), but he wasn't racing well and the trainer didn't have the time to work with him so he called us. In many cases, these horses end up in substandard places or kill pens. Those benefitted: The trainer who no longer has to fed or house the horse.

To re-train these horses so that they can be used as pleasure horses as this makes them much easier to find homes for. Daniel retired from the track at age 14and, like most Standardbreds, had never been ridden. Our trainer worked with him and took him through a standard process. He is now comfortable and calm under saddle and will be up for adoption soon. Those benefitted: The original owner who could no longer afford. To take care of the horse.

To re-home these retrained Standardbreds with an adopter who is a good match in terms of ability, appropriateness of their property of boarding facility, and intended use of the horse. Bad Moonshine also came to us as a track retiree. He took to riding easily, loved people, seemed generally calm, reliable and eager to please. He was adopted by a family that teaches riding lessons. He is now being ridden by much younger riders than most retired racehorses. They are crazy about him and really trust him with younger riders. Those benefitted: The original owner who could no longer afford to take care to the horse, the adopter who got a great horse that will suit their needs for years to come.
